Stop Menopause Hot Flashes, Naturally

hot flashesHot Flashes…

A sudden and intense wave of heat overcomes your face and neck out of nowhere. Your heart pounds in your chest and you may even have difficulty catching your breath. Are you having a heart attack—a stroke? In all likelihood, no—particularly if you are approaching or in menopause. This intense and uncomfortable sensation that so many women experience are the ever-dreaded hot flashes.

Hot flashes can be a mild nuisance or a virtually debilitating symptom of menopause, depending on their intensity and frequency. While not all women will experience hot flashes (those lucky things!), about 75 percent of menopausal women will to some extent. Because this menopause symptom can be so severe, even to the point of interfering with sleep, most women are more than happy to swallow the synthetic hormone replacement pills their doctor recommends for them, much to their own demise. Is there a natural remedy for hot flashes? Yes, there definitely is.

Natural Menopause Hot Flashes Remedies

An interesting recent study reported by CNN in 2010 shows that menopausal women who are overweight tend to have more severe and frequent hot flashes. The same study also showed that for every 11 pounds of weight a woman lost, her hot flashes decreased in intensity, frequency, and duration by about one third. Interestingly enough, those 25 lucky percent of women who do not experience menopause hot flashes generally had maintained their ideal weight prior to entering menopause.

As this study would suggest, losing the excess pounds you may be carrying could have a significant impact on your overall comfort during menopause. A healthy diet and exercise routine will get you started toward this goal, but you must experience the weight loss to gain any relief from hot flashes. Since losing weight (healthily) takes time, however, there are things you can do in the interim that can help you cope with your hot flashes until the fruits of your labor begin to ripen.

  • Get rid of everything in your diet that is processed, refined, or otherwise unnatural. Bleached or “enriched” flours, sugars, and fats all will make your menopause hot flashes worse.
  • Have some fun in the sun. While adding heat to heat may seem counterintuitive, the sun mobilizes the important vitamin D that is so crucial to your menopausal and overall well-being. Just make sure you are taking it in healthy doses and don’t overexpose yourself.
  • Invest in some Black Cohash. This little herb has been long known to decrease, and even eliminate, those terrible hot flashes that come with menopause.

When all else fails, you may consider some form of natural hormone replacement therapy. Known as bioidentical hormones, these hormones are naturally derived and compounded to work in your body the exact same way your own hormones do. This is completely different from synthetic hormone replacement therapy in which man made compounds that claim to be the same as natural hormones do not have the same effect on the body as the natural variety. While this approach may provide you with relief, it is important that you use this as a last resort after having tried the other natural menopause hot flash remedies available to you.
